Chad Ends Military Cooperation Agreement With France

The Government of the Republic of Chad has announced its decision to terminate the defense cooperation agreement with France, last revised on September 5, 2019. This historic decision marks a significant shift in the bilateral relations between the two nations.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, the Chadian government explained that the decision followed a thorough review of the agreement. It emphasized Chad’s desire to assert its full sovereignty and redefine its strategic partnerships to align with national priorities after 66 years of independence.

Chad committed to respecting the provisions of the agreement regarding its termination, including the required notice period, and pledged to collaborate with French authorities to ensure a smooth transition.

The government underscored that the decision does not call into question the longstanding historical ties and friendship between the two countries. Chad reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive relations with France in other areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both nations.

Chad expressed gratitude to France for the cooperation extended under the agreement and remained open to exploring new forms of partnership.

The announcement was signed by Chad’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, Chadians Abroad, and International Cooperation, as well as the government spokesperson, Abderaman Koulamallah.
