Kano State Government Rejects Tax Reform Bills
The Kano State Government has expressed strong opposition to the proposed tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, articulated this stance during the 2025 New Year celebration at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre.
The position was detailed in a statement issued by the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.
Addressing the issue, Governor Yusuf stated, “This tax reform bill fails to address the pressing economic challenges we face. Kano State opposes any policy that compromises the welfare of our people.”

The governor commended Kano residents for their resilience amid economic difficulties, describing the proposed tax increase as “untimely, inequitable, and harmful to national cohesion.” He emphasized the hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in the northern region, due to hyperinflation and insecurity, urging the federal government to prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger in the region.
Highlighting his administration’s achievements in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and international scholarship programs, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Kano State. He also reminded the public of the Supreme Court’s January 2024 ruling that confirmed his mandate as Kano’s legitimate leader.
The statement further recognized the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, describing it as a victory for the will of the people.
Deputy Governor Gwarzo emphasized that the authority to appoint an Emir lies solely with the Governor of Kano State and urged those meddling in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and uphold peace.
