For the first time in over 15 years, a state-owned university has earned the honor of hosting the prestigious 47th Annual Conference of the Genetic Society of Nigeria (GSN),and that university is none other than Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka. This achievement is not one that came handily, but a recognition of DELSU’s rising influence in the field of genetics and life sciences, particularly through the Faculty of Agriculture,Science and Basic Medical Sciences.

Professor Samuel Olakojo, President of the Genetics Society of Nigeria and a distinguished geneticist from the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) announced the decision to bring this high-profile conference to DELSU at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society which took place at the Federal University of Technology Akure in November 2024, where the 46th edition of the Society’s Conference was hosted. In what can be described as a defining moment for DELSU,

Professor Olakojo reached out to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, through the Society’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ufuoma Godstime Sorhue, who is a key figure in DELSU’s Animal Science Department. This move was a direct acknowledgment of DELSU’s growing academic contributions to the field of genetics, making it the natural choice to host an event of this magnitude.
