Delta: Police Inaugurate School Protection Squad

The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday inaugurated the school protection squad under the Safe School Initiative championed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The inauguration of the specialised squad took place during a stakeholders’ forum held at the Old Government House, Asaba, and was presided over by the Inspector-General of Police, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Salman Dogo.

Describing the specialised squad as the heart of the Safe School Initiative, Egbetokun said the team comprises officers specially trained and equipped to safeguard learning institutions and respond swiftly to threats that may arise.

“These officers are more than just guardians; they are mentors, liaisons, and role models. Trained not only in crisis response but also in youth engagement, conflict resolution, and community interaction, they will serve with compassion, discipline, and unwavering dedication,” he stated.

Egbetokun highlighted that the initiative is a reflection of his unwavering commitment to the safety of students and educational institutions.

“This initiative is more than a programme, it is a promise. A promise that our children can attend school without fear, and that our teachers can focus on education rather than emergency response.

“This initiative is a call to collective action, because a safe school is a strong school, and a strong school builds a strong community,” he declared.

The inspector general of police added that commissioners of police across the zone have been directed to engage stakeholders and ensure that safety in schools becomes a guaranteed right rather than a privilege.

“Our schools are not only sanctuaries of knowledge but also the foundation for the future leaders of Nigeria. Their protection is non-negotiable,” he emphasised.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who declared the forum open, expressed his admiration for the initiative and pledged the state government’s continued support.

“The government of Delta State deeply values your cooperation and partnership in the pursuit of enhanced peace and security as contained in the MORE agenda,” he said.

“I am particularly impressed with the resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to keep our schools safe from crime and crime-related activities.”

The governor applauded the efforts of the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, for his dedication to duty.

He stressed the importance of collaboration with communities and the private sector in achieving lasting security.

The event was attended by stakeholders from all sectors, including education, security, government, civil society, and the media.
