Nigeria Ahead Of South Africa, Ghana As Super Eagles Move Up In FIFA Ranking
The Super Eagles are up in the latest FIFA ranking despite playing a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe last month.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved up one spot in the April FIFA rankings released on Thursday by the world football governing body.
The Super Eagles were ranked the 44th best football nation in the World in 2024 but are now ranked 43rd in the first ranking of 2025.

The movement comes after the three-time African champions picked up a win and a draw in their March 2025 games. Nigeria beat Rwanda 2-0 to secure their first win of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers before playing a 1-1 draw at home against Zimbabwe.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a setback against Zimbabwe in their 2026 World Cup bid.
Although the result against Zimbabwe dealt a major blow to their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, the result against Rwanda was enough to lift them in the latest ranking.
Their new position also means that the Super Eagles remain ahead of South Africa, the group leaders in their qualifying group.
The Bafana Bafana also moved up one place to 56th in the world and tenth in Africa. The Super Eagles are also ahead of the Black Stars of Ghana, now 76th in the world.
Meanwhile, Morocco remain the number one nation in Africa and now the 12th best nation in the world after moving up two places.
The Atlas Lions are followed by Senegal, although the Teranga Lions dropped two spots to 19th in the world. Egypt are third after moving up one spot to 32nd in the world while Algeria (up to 36) and Cote d’Ivoire (up 5 to 41st) round up the top five in Africa.
Meanwhile, world champions Argentina remain the number one nation in the world. La Albiceleste are followed by Spain after the European champions moved past France, now third in the world.
The Three Lions of England are fourth while five-time world champions Brazil round up the rest of the top five.
