DELSU Hosts Virtual Matriculation Ceremony For Open-Distance, E-Learning Students

Delta State University has hosted its maiden matriculation ceremony for 82 Nursing students admitted through the Open Distance and E-Learning (ODEL) programme.

In a press statement signed by Dr Ese Umukoro, Deputy Director of Ceremonials, Information and Public Relations Delta State University, Abraka says, the ceremony which was hosted in the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room Site II, DELSU on Thursday, May 22,2025 saw the newly admitted students join via Zoom with one of them present in person.

According to the statement, it was a historic and momentous ceremony as it was the first of its kind in the history of Delta State University’s existence for thirty-two years. According to the statement, this ceremony marked the formal admission of these pioneer students which is in line with global best practices in an increasingly digitalized and interconnected educational landscape.

Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba expressed delight at the virtual maiden matriculation ceremony of students admitted into Open Distance and E-Learning of the university for the 2024/2025 Academic Session, describing it as a significant and commendable milestone.

Professor Asagba informed the students that they were the pioneer cohorts of the University’s ODEL programme just as he said, they were among the fortunate eighty-two candidates deemed eligible for admission from the larger pool of applicants.

The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Ijeoma Owamah charged the ODEL matriculants to study the matriculation oath carefully and adhere strictly to its provisions to avoid any breach and the consequent penalties.

Earlier, in her address, the Registrar of the University, Mrs Rufina Ufiofio informed the matriculants that their matriculation was unique as it was the first of its kind in the history of the university.

The highlights of the ceremony were the administration of matriculation oath on the students by the University Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufiofio, the University’s usual tradition of procession of the physically present matriculating student for the ceremony and group photographs of matriculant who was physically present.

Present at the virtual maiden matriculation ceremony included, representative of the University Bursar, the University Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Josephine Onohwakpor, Provost of College of Health Sciences, Professor Emmanuel Odokuma, Dean of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Dennis Eboh, Director of the Centre for Open Distance and E-Learning (CODEL), Professor Oghenerhoro Odedede, Director of Directorate of Ceremonials, Information and Public Relations, Professor Enajite Ojaruega, the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Henry Eseka, Deputy Director of CODEL, Mrs Brotobor Deliverance, Co-ordinator of Department of Nursing Science, Mrs Judith Esievo, the Principal Assistant Registrar (PAR) of CODEL, Mrs Uyo, among others.
