Okowa Hails Owamah’s Appointment AS DELSU DVC, Says ‘Hard Work Can Take You To The Top”

At a thanksgiving service held at St. Michael’s Anglican Church in Owa-Alero, Delta State, former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa highlighted the significance of perseverance, hard work, and integrity in achieving success, regardless of one’s background.

The event was organized in honor of Professor Hilary Owamah, who was recently appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Delta State University, Abraka.

Speaking at the event, Okowa praised Professor Owamah’s rise in the academic world, describing it as an inspiring example of what determination and commitment can accomplish.

“I am proud of you. You have stirred up in my heart what people can achieve if they work hard and stay focused. Even from a humble beginning, it is possible to get to the top,” Okowa stated.

He emphasized that Owamah’s success story serves as motivation for others who may be facing difficult circumstances.

Okowa also commended the leadership of Delta State University for recognizing Owamah’s capabilities and placing him in such a key position.

He particularly acknowledged the role of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Asagba, in making the appointment.

“I am a happy man. Prof. Owamah was born when I had already become a medical doctor, and today I see him not only as a professor but now a Deputy Vice Chancellor. That makes me proud,” he said, underscoring the generational progress and impact of consistent effort.

Professor Asagba, in his remarks, described Owamah as a highly industrious and committed academic.

Referring to him as “a working machine,” Asagba explained the strategic importance of the DVC (Academic) role, calling it the “engine room” of the university.

He expressed confidence in Owamah’s ability to perform and urged members of the university community to support him fully.

The service also featured a sermon delivered by the Anglican Bishop of Ika Diocese, Rt. Rev. Godfrey Ekpenisi.

The bishop spoke on the spiritual dimension of leadership and the responsibilities that come with elevation. Citing Luke 12:48—“to whom much is given, much will be required”—he called on the new DVC to lead with humility, dedication, and moral integrity.

In his own speech, Professor Owamah looked back on his life journey and the challenges he faced while pursuing his education.

He attributed his progress to God’s grace and the support of those around him.

“I come from a very poor background, and I thank God for seeing me through despite the tough circumstances,” he said.

His words reflected a deep sense of gratitude and a commitment to continue working hard in his new role.

The event was not only a celebration of academic achievement but also a moment to reflect on the values of perseverance, honesty, and service.
