Jega Hails Tinubu As “Problem Solver” Over Bold Livestock Sector Reforms

Former INEC Chairman
and Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Reforms, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for tackling Nigeria’s decades-long farmer-herder crisis through strategic livestock sector reforms, describing him as problems solver

Speaking at the 2025 Blueprint Impact Series and Awards in Abuja, Jega described the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a visionary move, aimed at transforming a $30 billion industry that has long been underdeveloped.

He noted that the initiative could reduce Nigeria’s $2 billion annual milk import bill while boosting national security, rural livelihoods, and economic growth.

He praised Tinubu’s creation of a dedicated Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a forward-looking solution with the potential to unlock vast economic opportunities.

Jega emphasized that the livestock sector is more than just agriculture, calling it a foundation for rural livelihoods, nutrition security, and regional trade.

He urged stakeholders—governments, private investors, and livestock professionals—to support the reforms by investing in research, ranching systems, veterinary services, and cold-chain logistics.

With the right policies and partnerships, he said, Nigeria could become a regional leader in livestock exports while reducing insecurity linked to rural economic deprivation.

“With proper management, we can turn conflict into opportunity and transform livestock into a true engine of inclusive growth,” Jega stated.

Other speakers at the event, including SGF Senator George Akume, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, and Information Minister Mohammed Idris Malagi, highlighted the importance of transitioning from open grazing to ranching and integrating livestock into the global value chain. They also stressed the media’s crucial role in promoting unity and accountability while supporting national development. The awards ceremony honored key public figures and institutions for excellence in governance, journalism, and leadership, reinforcing the event’s theme of transformative contributions to Nigeria’s progress.
