All That Got The Required Cut-Off Mark Had Their Names On Our Merit List For Admission –DELSU

The Professor Samuel Asagba-led administration at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has fulfilled the promise to admit all students that scored the required cut off mark needed to be admitted into the institution.

Recall that this is the first admission process carried out under Professor Asagba who assumed office in 2024.

Speaking to Oasis Magazine via a telephone chat recently, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, said that this development again attests to the VC’s style of keeping to his promises.

According to him, it is rare to see a university admitting 75 percent of those seeking admission on its merit list.

His words: “Professor Asagba has said that the admission must be merit based and so he directed that I ensure that everything is by merit and we have released our first batch and 75 percent of the intakes are on the merit list. For the first time, we are seeing a university in Nigeria release 5,501 names in first batch as merit list such that no one in that list knows anyone or gave anyone anything to lobby for it,. This is out of our quota of 8,174.

“You will also see that those professional courses that are pegged like Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Law that are 120, DELSU has admitted 75 percent of that fixed quota by merit. DELSU VC always means what he says and says what he means. There is no one who has the required score that was not admitted. If the cutoff is 75, those that scored 75 and above have been admitted. DELSU is a leading example to other Nigeria universities that things can be done by merit.”

On when the second batch will be released, he said DELSU has advertised for vacancy, adding that those that did not meet up with the cutoff for their course can apply for a change of course, just as he hinted that the form for a change of course will be sold for a week for those that want to change their courses to one that that they have the required cut off for.

“It has begun and will close on the 29^th of September,” he said.

Furthermore, he said DELSU may consider 25 percent for the second batch and then the institution will shut its gates on admission seekers.

“So the number of batches depends on when the 100 percent quota is met,” he said.

Furthermore, he said that “the difference in this year’s cutoff is that there was some marginal increase in the cutoffs for professional courses and even for courses that used to be quite small before like Political Science, Accounting, Business Admin, Public Admin and then the professional courses.

According to him, “although JAMB performance was poor, those that did well, did very well and those that did not do well did not do well at all.”

Meanwhile, he said the decision to scrap POST UTME exams remains the best, noting that JAMB now has integrity and the scores reflect the students’ capacity.

In his words, “a child who scored 200 in JAMB is automatically a C student except such improves later,” saying: “A child that scored 280 in JAMB is an A student except such depreciates later in life because JAMB no more allows cheating since malpractice has been reduced to the barest minimum and so it is an exam that can be trusted.”

He said further: “So, if the university can allocate 70 of the score required for admission to JAMB score, that is a very good one and 30 percent to SCCE and we hope that with time they too will improve. If you look at it, those who did well in JAMB also did well in their O ‘level. So the correlation is high.”

The don said those already granted admission must quickly do their acceptance and those yet to upload their O ‘Level results to JAMB Central Admission Processing Systems (CAPS) should do so immediately so the process can be completed.

Speaking further, he said: “Admission is a process; the school recommends you and JAMB has to confirm you,”

“Those that have been granted admission should quickly upload their information to JAMB CAPS and print their admission letter from JAMB and start getting ready to resume on November 2 when school resumes. And when they resume, they must reciprocate the Vice Chancellor’s magnanimity of deciding to have 75 percent of the university’s quota for admission as merit list by being serious with their academics.”

Meanwhile, a statement signed by Prof. Owamah has urged “all prospective candidates who have applied for the 2025/2026 Admission into Delta State University, Abraka and are yet to upload their O’level results on JAMB CAPS, are to do so on or before Monday, 29th September, 2025, for their seamless consideration for admission,”
