DHQ Debunks Coup Attempt Rumours
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has
described online publications insinuating that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup as “a false and misleading report.”
Recall that the report also made spurious references to the recent DHQ press release announcing the arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation for professional misconduct.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, clarified that the decision to cancel the Independence Day parade was made to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to attend a critical bilateral meeting abroad, while enabling the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to maintain focus on ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
Furthermore, the DHQ said “that the ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism is maintained within the ranks.”
Adding: “An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings would be made public.”

The DHQ also called on Nigerians to remain calm and continue supporting the country’s security agencies.
Continuing, the DHQ urged the public to disregard the false information circulating online, labelling such reports as the work of misinformation agents and enemies of the nation.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement concluded.
