Army Council Approves Promotion Of 105 Senior Officers

The Army Council has approved the promotion of 105 senior officers of the Nigerian Army to the next ranks of Major General and Brigadier General, the Army Public Relations Directorate said on Friday.

A statement signed by Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, said the decision was reached on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025.

According to the statement, 28 Brigadier Generals were elevated to the rank of Major General, while 77 Colonels were promoted to Brigadier General.

Those promoted to Major General include Brig.-Gen. O. Adegbe of the Defence Intelligence Agency; Brig.-Gen. S.M. Uba, Director of Defence Information; Brig.-Gen. R.E. Hedima, Acting Chief of Military Intelligence (Army); and Brig.-Gen. R.T. Utsaha, Deputy Director, Defence Operations.

Others are Brig.-Gen. A.M. Umar, Commandant, Warrant Officer Academy; Brig.-Gen. S. Sulaiman, Deputy Military Secretary (Army); Brig.-Gen. I.O. Bassey, Director, Nigerian Army Operations Centre; and Brig.-Gen. C.A. Ekeator of the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Also elevated were Brig.-Gen. S.Y. Yakasai, Acting Director of Procurement in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff; Brig.-Gen. W.L. Nzidee of the Army Logistics Department; Brig.-Gen. S.A. Emmanuel of Nigerian Army Signals; Brig.-Gen. S.S. Tilawan, Acting Commander, Sector 3, Operation HADIN KAI; Brig.-Gen. M.O. Agi of the NDA TETFund Desk; Brig.-Gen. I.M. Abbas, Commander 34 Brigade; and Brig.-Gen. Z.A. Saidu, who was promoted posthumously.

The statement also listed the newly promoted Brigadier Generals drawn from various formations and units, including the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Army Headquarters Garrison, Defence Headquarters, Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Nigerian Army Dog Centre, 9 Brigade, 401 Special Forces Brigade, the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, and several Nigerian Army Reference Hospitals.

While congratulating the officers and their families, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, charged them to demonstrate exemplary leadership and justify the confidence reposed in them.

He urged the senior officers to “cultivate bold, innovative and unconventional solutions” to effectively respond to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Shaibu further reminded them of their oath to defend the territorial integrity of the country, stressing that their loyalty to the Constitution must remain “absolute, unwavering and beyond reproach.”
