Nigerian Senator, Akwashiki, Dies On New Year’s Eve

The senator representing Nasarawa North in the National Assembly, Godiya Akwashiki of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52; a family source has confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Senator Akwashiki, a former Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), died on Thursday, December 31, 2025, in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness.

He was first elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2019 and was re-elected for a second term, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to secure two consecutive terms since the creation of the state in 1996.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Mr. Akwashiki was widely known for his strong grassroots political base and focus on constituency-driven projects.

He is survived by a wife, children, and many relations.
