Delta Police Arrest Suspected Kidnappers, Gun Runners, Recover Two AK-47 Rifles

The Delta State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its intelligence-led operations against suspected kidnappers and illegal arms trafficking syndicates operating within and beyond the state, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles with live ammunition.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said operatives of the command’s tactical team based in Ughelli arrested five suspected kidnappers and gun runners in separate coordinated operations.

According to the statement, on April 24, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., operatives acting on credible intelligence arrested one Ahmadu Usman, 22, a native of Lafiya, Nasarawa State, at Ekuigbo area of Ughelli over his alleged connection with a kidnapping syndicate terrorising commuters along the Ughelli–Warri Road.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Haruna Abdullahi, 37, at Trailer Park along the Warri–Sapele Road, where officers recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with 36 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

The police said both suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue.
In a separate operation on April 23, 2026, the tactical team also arrested suspects linked to an inter-state gun-running and kidnapping network.

Police said one suspect was first arrested in Ughelli alongside Haruna Jibrin, 30, a native of Wase, Plateau State, who was allegedly assigned to facilitate the movement of arms from Ughelli to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

A follow-up operation on April 24 led to the arrest of another accomplice, Isiyaku Adamu, 38, in Rivers State.

During the operation, police recovered another AK-47 rifle allegedly meant for transportation, as well as a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number MUS 138 DJ, which was reportedly used in the operation.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for kidnapping and illegal arms trafficking, assuring residents of sustained operations to ensure public safety across the state.

He urged members of the public to continue supporting the police with credible information that could aid crime-fighting efforts.
