NBC Issues Formal Notice To Broadcasters Over Code Breaches In News, Political Programmes
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to broadcast stations across Nigeria over persistent violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in the coverage of news, current affairs, and political programmes.
In a statement, the commission expressed concern over what it described as recurring breaches involving unverified claims, inflammatory content, hate speech, and failure to uphold fairness, balance, and professionalism in broadcast content.
NBC warned that such violations threaten national unity, public peace, and the integrity of the broadcasting industry, especially as political activities continue to intensify across the country.
The commission reminded broadcasters of their responsibility to ensure that all news and political programmes adhere strictly to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in areas relating to accuracy, decency, objectivity, and public interest.

It stressed that stations must avoid broadcasting content capable of inciting violence, spreading misinformation, or promoting ethnic, religious, or political divisions.
The regulatory body also urged media organisations to strengthen internal editorial checks and ensure presenters, producers, and political programme hosts comply fully with professional and ethical standards.
NBC warned that any station found violating the code would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining responsible broadcasting and preserving the role of the media as a tool for national development, peace, and democratic accountability.
