Agbor Train Crash: NRC Confirms Four Dead, Releases Fresh Updates

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the death of four persons and injuries to several others following a train accident along the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor near Agbor in Delta State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, the Corporation disclosed that four coaches capsized while one coach derailed during the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

According to preliminary reports, the victims comprised two adult women, one adult man, and an infant.

The NRC said a total of 442 passengers had booked for the journey, while 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers were also on board, bringing the total number of occupants on the train to 482.

The Corporation stated that emergency rescue and evacuation operations were immediately activated with support from the Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local authorities, and other emergency responders.

The rescue operation was completed by 6:30 p.m., with injured passengers evacuated to medical facilities in Agbor for treatment.

Among notable passengers on board were the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, and former Delta State Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Patrick Ukah.

The Ministry disclosed that 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

It further revealed that one NRC staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury and is receiving treatment in stable condition.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation and the NRC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Corporation also commended the Delta State Government, emergency responders, security agencies, medical personnel, members of the NRC Mechanical Directorate, the Special Rescue and Emergency Team, and members of the public for their swift response during the rescue operation.

According to the statement, the full passenger manifest has been retrieved and will be made available to relevant authorities upon request, while efforts are ongoing to identify all injured and deceased persons for proper documentation.

The NRC added that a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced.
