DESOPADEC Begins De-silting Exercise in Effurun GRA

—As Evacuation Of Waste, Debris, Sand Continues At Jakpa Road

The de-silting of drainages and canals in the Commissions mandate areas commenced today Sunday June 28, 2026 at Effurun GRA even as the exercise is ongoing at Jakpa road, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The exercise aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of impending storm water flooding in the mandate areas of the Commission, as predicted by NIMET, has been seen as a welcome development by many community leaders and residents alike.

At Jakpa road, artisans, pay loaders and tippers were in action, opening up blocked drainages and evacuating massive sand, waste and debris.

Meanwhile, the exercise commenced in various streets of Effurun GRA today, including the new Ovie of Uvwie palace road; General Oneya street; High Court road; Agric road amongst others.

Speaking with our reporter at Effurun GRA, Chief Akpotu Moses who is resident in the area used the heavy rainfall recorded today and the massive flooding experienced in the area to justify the immense intervention by the Commission.

“You can see that the exercise is timely, judging from the devastating effect of the flooding due to the heavy downpour. We commend the Commission and the Governor of Delta State for this proactive intervention,” he said.

He however appealed to residents in the area to desist from deliberately dumping refuse inside and blocking the drainage system, noting that such acts are inimical to the public health and environment.

“We are also appealing to the government to construct a bigger drainage system in the area as many of the drainages have failed,” he added.

The ongoing exercise has continued in various communities across the Commissions mandate areas.
