FG Launches Digital Platform To Track Every School, Learner

The Federal Government has unveiled the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), a new technology-driven platform designed to create a unified database of every school, learner and teacher in Nigeria, with the aim of strengthening education planning, transparency and accountability.

The platform is scheduled for official launch on July 1, 2026, alongside the Public DNEMIS Portal and the inauguration of State Implementation Teams. It forms a key component of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), one of the flagship reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) championed by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa.

Speaking during a pre-launch media briefing in Abuja, the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit in the Office of the Minister of Education, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, said the initiative was introduced to address decades of fragmented and unreliable education data that have hampered effective planning, policymaking and governance across the sector.

According to him, NEDI was developed as a comprehensive national framework to harmonise and standardise education data management across all levels of education, while DNEMIS serves as its flagship digital platform.

He explained that the system will provide timely, reliable and accessible data to support planning, budgeting, policy formulation, monitoring and improved service delivery by ensuring that every learner, teacher, school and public investment in education is captured in a single national database.

Onigbanjo said the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that education reforms are guided by credible evidence rather than assumptions.

He added that the progress made through NEDI and DNEMIS demonstrates the ministry’s determination to ensure that education reforms are properly coordinated, implemented and evaluated.

Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Miss Mojoyin Adebajo, said DNEMIS was developed on the globally recognised District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) platform to modernise education administration and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.

She explained that the platform will digitise the Annual School Census, replacing the largely manual process of collecting education data with an integrated digital system capable of generating accurate, real-time information on schools, learners, teachers and educational infrastructure.

According to Adebajo, the innovation will improve resource allocation, strengthen programme monitoring and enhance planning and service delivery across Nigeria’s education sector.

She also highlighted the Public DNEMIS Portal as one of the initiative’s major innovations, noting that, for the first time, selected official education data will be made publicly accessible to researchers, policymakers, journalists, development partners, civil society organisations and the general public.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the move would promote transparency, improve access to credible information and encourage wider stakeholder participation in shaping the country’s education policies.

The ministry acknowledged the technical support of the United Nations Children’s Fund and the University of Oslo, describing the partnership as critical to accelerating sustainable education reforms in Nigeria.

It expressed confidence that DNEMIS would bridge longstanding gaps in education data management by providing a single, trusted national database to support real-time decision-making, improve coordination between federal and state education institutions and advance the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for quality education.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with state governments, development partners and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the platform and build a more transparent, technology-driven and globally competitive education system for all Nigerians.
