The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, has solicited the assistance of the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa in the completion of the Administrative/Senate building located in Site III of the institution’s main campus in Abraka,
The Pro-Chancellor who made this call while delivering his address during the 11th convocation of the institution, that took place recently in Abraka, added that the university in a long while is yet to have any legacy physical infrastructure of capital projects sponsored by the State Government.
His words: “Think through the possibility to capture the proposal for the completion of this legacy edifice for the university,” saying that if done, “it would make a great sense of history.”
According to the Governing Council Chairman, the Senate building project started in the early part of the first tenure of the immediate past Governor of the State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Also, Oyovbaire solicited the understanding of the Okowa-led government in providing the needed funds for ongoing accreditation of programmes by Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), saying that over 30 programmes were accredited in 2016 and 2017, an exercise which he said was expensive.
Still on the area of funding, Oyovbaire disclosed that the University library system needs capital funding, noting that any University worthy of its core mandate of teaching, learning, research, publication and mentoring, revolves around the quality of its library system and network.
Earlier on, Oyovbaire said that to deepen the process of peace and stability of the University, the Governing Council has decided to, in the next two years, engage the leaderships of the host communities of the three campuses in interactive sessions, with the aim of tackling issues of security and encroachment upon University land.
Continuing, he was optimistic that this move will lead to continued understanding and support for discipline and harmony in the relationship between the Management of the university and host communities.
