DELSU: Final Year Student Commits Suicide Over Poor Results
A final year student of the Department of Pharmacy, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Orumah Efemena, has allegedly committed suicide after being handed two semesters extension over his poor results in his final year examination.
The deceased, in his early mid 20’s was alleged to have ingested two containers of insecticide on Wednesday when he got wind of the best information that he would be spending another session in the university.
This reporter gathered that this was the second time the victim would be repeating the class in the university. One of his course mates who simply gave his name as, Mr. Ejiro, described the death as a collective loss.
He said that the deceased had been depressed on discovering he had been put on probation for another semester. Efemena, who was the eldest child of his parents, was said to have also received some query over his poor performance by his father.
Our correspondent gathered that he was found dead in his room in a popular hostel where he resided. A lecturer of the university who also confirmed the unfortunate but preventable incident, said that medical report indicated that the student took substances believed to be sniper, an insect killing substance.
He added that a check was carried out at his room in the hostel and two empty containers of the product were discovered, confirming the report of the doctors
Contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, said : ” I spoke with the Divisional Police Officer of Abraka yesterday and he said to the best of his knowledge such information is not at his disposal.
” Even when I drew his attention to the fact that news medium online and other social media platform reported the incident with photograph of the deceased, he insisted that there was nothing of such.”
The Public Relations Officer of DELSU, Mr. Freeborn Aganbi, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.
