Governor Okowa Assures NYSC Of Government’s Support To Tackle Challenges

The Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has said that his government will continue to support the National Youth Service Scheme by working out ways of ameliorating the challenges facing it in the state to enable it render services more effectively and efficiently.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Barr. Deacon Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, (SPSP) on the occasion of the opening ceremony and swearing-in of the 2018 Batch A corps members deployed to Delta State at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Issele-uku, said government will continue to reward outstanding performance of corps members who distinguish themselves during the service year.
The governor who congratulated all the corps members on their academic success and graduation from the various institutions of higher learning across the nation and abroad, which qualified them for the NYSC scheme, prayed for God’s guidance for the corpers to help them scale through the important journey which they are just embarking on.
He told corps members that the orientation course marks a very important segment of their service year, as it will provide a good opportunity for them to be involved in physical, sociological and psychological training, adding that the programme is fundamental and forms the bedrock for other components of the service year.
The governor said further that the programme will provide an ideal interface and entry into the scheme, including enlightening them on the noble ideals of promoting national integration and development.
Governor Okowa noted that the management of the NYSC has instituted initiatives aimed at proffering solutions to unemployment in the country by the introduction of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to equip graduate youths with the basic skills, while calling on the corps members to be readily available and participate in all the orientation programme to maximally benefit from the exercise.
The state coordinator NYSC, Delta State, Mr Omotade Ayodele Folorunso Benjamin, who also delivered his address at the event, said that the 2018, Batch “A” orientation course commenced nationwide on Thursday, 19th April 2018 with the registration of those young Nigerians, and at the close of registration at midnight, Friday 20th April 2018, a total of 2288 corps members comprising 1097 males and 1197 females have been duly registered and have all shown high level of discipline.
He added that the orientation course which is an induction process into the NYSC scheme is designed to last for three weeks, as it is carefully planned and designed to provide these corps members with the requisite skills and knowledge needed for the one year national service and beyond, as corps members will be exposed to series of lectures ranging from the ideal and operations of the NYSC, security, professional lectures to lecture on national core values.
He explained that since an appreciable percentage of these corps members are non indigenes of this state and most are visiting the state for the first time, they will also be introduced to the people, culture, traditions and language of the people of Delta State and to also prepare them for a life of self employment and entrepreneurship, adding that they will also pass through Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training.
The Secretary to the Delta State Government, Honourable Ovie Festus Agas, who is also the Chairman NYSC, Delta State governing board, during his address, said he is happy that the visible achievement recorded by the National Youth Service Corps Scheme in the state is a direct result of His Excellency’s ever increasing commitment and support to the course of nation building through youth empowerment.
The Delta state SSG while welcoming the corps members to Delta State encouraged them to render selfless and patriotic service to their fatherland in Delta state, stressing that by the time they conclude their orientation course and are posted to their places of primary assignment, they will discover the warm hospitality of Deltans.
He charged the Corps member to concentrate on the training programmes so that the principal objectives of the NYSC scheme, and in particular the aim of the orientation course will be achieved, noting that their commitment and participatory continuation to the scheme of the orientation programme will be a reliable base for a successful and fruitful service year.
