DELSU Management Bows, Shifts Congregation Election To May 28

The Management of Delta State University, Abraka, has shifted the earlier scheduled meeting of congregation from Friday, 25th to Monday, 28th May, 2018.
According to an internal memorandum from the office of the Registrar of the institution, the rescheduling of the meeting billed to hold alongside the election of Congregation Representatives to Council, was rescheduled due to the cultural festival of Oruarivie-Abraka Kingdom, the university’s host community.
This decision by the Pereremode-led administration many said was prompted as a result of backslashes from some members of the university community, who wondered why the university was bent on going on with the elections on the said say despite that it clashed with the cultural day of the community.
Some of the critics that called for the shift in date argued that the management shifted examination of students that fell on the said day, but were adamant to shift the election from the same day.
They cited other reasons for their demand for the shift to include the fact that Fridays are days were workers engage in social activities such as attending burials, adding that a few of them go to the mosques, and thus considered the Friday’s choice as not fit.
The initial date for the meeting was scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 23rd May and then shifted to Friday, 25th May, 2018.
A source from the management under conditions of anonymity defended the university authority, saying that the university meant no harm by deciding to go on with the election.
He said: “The number of those expected for the election from other campuses of the university outside Abraka are few and being adults unlike students, would have been able to manoeuvre and avoid the hot spots in town during the cultural day that in most cases is marred by violent displays by cutlass-wielding youths.
