CHAIRMAN, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka branch, Comrade Izu Monday, has decried the level of discrimination experienced by members of the union with regards to promotion, housing and staff training.
Izu, who stated this recently in Abraka during the opening ceremony of the 34th regular meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), called on the state Governor, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa, to prevail on the management in order to salvage the situation.
He said that promotion of non-teaching staff has become an annual battle in Delta State University thereby leading to stagnation of its members, adding that although the management of the university promoted it staff accordingly in 2016, it has reverted to its old policy of stagnation by its refusal to promote non-teaching staff in the 2017 promotion exercise.
The SSANU boss appealed to the university management to promote its members, pointing out that stagnation was alien to other labour sectors in the state.
On non-implementation of the 2016 promotion and arrears, Izu stated: “The non-implementation of the 2016 promotion and its accrued arrears and non-payment of the 2017/2018 annual incremental steps, despite government’s decision in this regard is a serious challenge.”
On non-payment of pensions and gratuity to DELSU pensioners, the SSANU boss said: ” non-payment of pension and gratuity to DELSU pensioners is a serious problem confronting us. While requesting that the issue be addressed, it is necessary also to call on the state government to expedite action on the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for staff of the university.
He added : “That DELSU is not enrolled into state government central payroll Is the reason for staff stagnation and non-payment of promotion related arrears. We, therefore, wish to request government to, please, enroll DELSU in the state central payroll without further delay.
