The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor
Mahmood Yakubu, has announced a shift in the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled to kick off later today to February 23, 2019.
Prof. Mahmud broke this news earlier today after an emergency meeting with the National Commissioners in Abuja on Friday 15th, February, 2019.
The INEC boss also announced a shift in the Gubernatorial, State Assembly and Federal Capital Territory elections from the 2nd of March to the 9th of March, 2019.
According to him, INEC reviewed its preparations for the 2019 elections and came up with the decision to shift the elections.
His words: “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and its determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the commission `came to a conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer fixable.
“This will afford the commission the opportunity to identify challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections. This was a difficult decision for the commission to take but necessary for the successful delivery of our elections and a consolidation of our democracy.”
He also hinted that a meeting between INEC and key stakeholders to inform them on the development would hold at the Abuja International Conference Centre by 2 p.m. today.
