Employability: UPU Youthwing Trains Urhobo Youths

Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, Youthwing, Worldwide under the leadership of Comrade Efemena Umukoro, successfully held a three-day coaching programme for youths selected from the 24 Urhobo kingdoms in Delta State.

The event which commenced with a two-day virtual training, ended at the weekend at Ruijegan Hotels,(Club 206) Abraka, Delta State.

Tagged: ‘Employability Grind 1.0’, the training focused on helping the participants secure their dream job and other vital areas.

The speakers include a business coach, Ugagaoghene Ogheneyole, Victoria Nwanne, a human resource development expert, Maxwell Idama and CEO, Clever Minds, Zion Oshiobugie.

Highpoint of the occasion was the presentation of certificates of attendance and a recommendation letter on behalf of the body to all participants.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the event, Comrade Umukoro said the concept of the programme was inspired by the achievements of the first President General of UPU, Mukoro Mowoe, who ensured that the first university graduates of Urhobo Nation was sponsored by UPU, Worldwide and UPU ensured that a job was provided for them as well.

He recalled that Urhobo College in Effurun was the brainchild of UPU because as a people Urhobo Nation believes education is the key to unlocking the future.

Continuing, he reiterated that one of the objectives of the UPU is to develop the Urhobo as a tribe, adding that “his administration is determined to change the narrative by following the track record of the founding fathers and giving Urhobo youths a corrosive voice they can trust.”

The president congratulated youths who were selected to attend the program from each kingdom and advised them not to withhold the knowledge to themselves but also extend it to others who are not fortunate to attend the mind blowing event .

While commending all that made inputs towards the success of the training, he urged the trainees to make good use of the knowledge they achieved from the programme.

He also said that due to many complains about “unemployment” in Urhobo land, the executive thought it wise to create a platform to gather Urhobo youths and empower them with knowledge in order for them to stand tall wherever they find themselves.

On his part, the group’s Secretary, Comrade (Barr) Ehaoma Harry, said: “This is the first time an executive of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) is getting it right. I must commend our president for the initiative and also thanked all the sponsors who believed in the dream and keyed into it.

Speaking further, he said: “Being the Secretary of the union and also a participant of the program, I have learnt alot of things and fully charged to positively impact my environment and the Urhobo nation at large.”

The lead trainer, Ogheneyole Ogagaoghene, stated: “I am sure that the lives of those that attended the training will not remain the same.

“We focused on employability generally, the trainees were taught how to choose their dream jobs and also in the area of personal branding. Too many persons are graduates but not employable. Some cannot write out Curriculum Vitae. Some do not know the difference between a CV and a resume. Others do not even know how a profile picture on a social media page can increase their chances of getting a job. These were few of the many areas we touched.”

Continuing, he said: “Seeing the passion that Comr. Umukoro has to better the lives of Urhobo youths, I have made a commitment to continue to be available whenever the need arises to be part of the project of training Urhobo youths at a lesser cost.”

Some of the participants described the training as “electrifying” and that they were glad that they were privileged to be selected for a highly eye-opening training of this kind.

In their separate interviews, they commended the leadership of the youth body for coming up with this rare idea to train youths, as they prayed for more of God’s wisdom to help them continue in the good work that they have started for Urhobo youths all over the world.

They added: “Our heads are full of many ideas and we cannot just wait to go back home to start implementing them.”
