Jessa Calls For Rotational Chairmanship In Ethiope East

As the Delta State Local Government Councils’ elections draw closer, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and chairmanship hopeful in Ethiope East Local Government Council, Chief (Amb.) Harrison Jessa, has appealed to the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as well as the people of the area, to allow a rotational chairmanship system operate in the council area as done at the state level.

Amb. Jessa, a three time traditional chieftain titles holder in the area, who made the appeal at his Abraka country home, said, “There are two political axis in Ethiope East LGA- the Abraka axis and the Agbon axis. From the inception, close to three decades now, of the council area, the Abraka axis has never produced the chairman of the council, only the Agbon axis has always produced the chairman of the council. They have also remained the only people who have produced the member representing the council area in the Delta State House of Assembly. The Abraka axis has never produced any in PDP, and this is not fair for the people of Abraka axis. Let the chairmanship sit be rotated between the two axis for the sake of equity and peace.”

On what are the challenges of the people, Chief Jessa said, “The council authority should explore other contacts aside the allocations coming to the area, to develop the area. The roads, particularly in Abraka axis, are in a very bad condition. Electricity is in a deplorable state and artisans are finding it difficult to cope in life.”

Speaking on the uniqueness of the Abraka axis, he said, “Abraka is the main hub of the council area. It is the city in the council area even though it is not the council headquarters. Almost every prominent person in the council has built a house in Abraka. It also hosts the Delta State University and it is the centre of academic activities in the state, yet the people need good markets, hospitals and roads.”

On the performance of the state government, he said, “The state governpr has been trying very well, doing his best. I’m appealing to him to remember the Abraka axis in the state and one of the ways of doing so is by making the chairmanship of the council rotational between us and the Agbon axis.”
