CDHR Asks FG To Declare State Of Emergency On Security

The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, CDHR, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency over the alarming level of insecurity in the country in order to put an end to these negative trends of killings, kidnappings and other related evils. .

The Acting National President, Comr Dr Prince Kehinde Taiga, who spoke on behalf of the body after the group’s National Council meeting at the weekend in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in a statement, said “Nigeria today is going through a high level of human rights infringement on so many fronts particularly with the high level of insecurity in the country with the unprecedented killings of farmers by the militia fulani herdsmen and the incessant kidnapping of pupils particularly Friday’s abduction of over 300 schoolgirls in Zamfara State by bandits.”

Adding: “The activities of the herders and bandits in the country today shows that the security of farmers and students respectively are no longer guaranteed.”

He continued: “The experience of kidnapping from Chibok, Dapchi, Kagara and Jangebe for ransom by bandits is more than enough reason for the federal government to declare this bandits as terrorist.

“Today in the northern part of our nation, we currently face multi-dimensional security challenges and continuous threats to the safety and security of our schools and this is an infringement of the rights of our students to association and learning.”

Furthermore, he said that at Nigeria must change its security approach in order for the country to win over the insecurities bedeviling the nation today.

“We cannot keep on doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results,” he noted.

According to him, “the change in service chiefs by the President hasn’t yielded any result worthy of note, and that’s why we are saying that there is need for us to change our approach today.”

CDHR called on all Nigerians to be united against this common enemy that has thrown the country into fear and emotional trauma, adding: “so that we can together in unity be victorious over them.”

Speaking further, he urged Nigerians to be reminded that the former National President, Dr Osagie Obayuwana remains suspended indefinitely, and that anyone who relates with him in the capacity of CDHR Nigeria President does that at his own risk.

“Dr Osagie led factional part of CDHR will soon become a thing of the past, and security personnel should take note,” he said.

On the appointment of Bawa to head the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, he commended Buhari for finding a youth worthy of the high office, as he urged Bawo not to play politics with the position but go after criminals without being selective.
