Insecurity: Use James Ibori’s Loot To Create Employment For Youths To Curb Crime In Delta –Activist Urges DTSG

Delta State Vice Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and rights activist, Comrade Derrick Agberen Oritsetomasan, has charged the Delta State Government under Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa to use former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori’s loot of £ 4.2 million returned to the state as announced by the Accountant General of the Federation to create employment for teeming youths by establishing industries for them to work, adding that with that, the rate of social vices ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, among others would be a thing of the past in the state.

Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsetomasan Agberen stated this during a peaceful campaign/rally against social vices across the state held on the 28th of May, 2021.

The human rights activist said the government should use diverse stategies to completely eradicate crime in the state by meaningfully engaging youths in meaningful ventures to discourage them from illegal activities among others.

He said: “Chief James ibori’s loot of £ 4.2 million should be used to create employment for youths in the state because that can help to reduce if not totally eradicate crimee in the state.”

According to him, records have shown that the negligence of the youths by successive governments is one of the major factors responsible for social vices such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, internet fraud (cyber crimes).

He said: “Many of the youths especially among the graduates have no jobs hence they are left with no option but to be involved in cyber crimes.”

The human rights activist said the percentage of graduates that are into cyber crimes is so high because that is the only way they think they can survive.

He therefore charged the state government to intensify its entrepreneural and skill acquisition programmes already in place to further create jobs for the teeming youths.

He added: “The state government should intensify efforts to see that youths are gainfully employed in this direction.”

Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsetomasan Agberen also charged the state government to focus more on the girlchild as they (girlchild) are important as their male counterparts, adding that they still form the bulk of the youths.

He continued: “If insecurity which has been in the country since 1960 can be eradicated, the employment of youths is necessary.”

The Delta State Vice Chairman of CDHR used the medium to thank the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, for his developmental strides in the state and urged him to keep the flag flying in this direction.

He said the state government can also grant amnesty to youths as many of them who are into crime who he believes would be ready to lay down their arms, saying that such can be rehabilitated and their energy chanelled into useful ventures.

The rights activist said the state and public agencies cannot continue to invest on insecurity (crimes control) while the masses are left with no food to eat.

According to him, if the youths who are future leaders are not empowered, Nigeria cannot experience rapid growth and development.

Earlier, the State Chairman of CDHR, Comrade Jonathan Giama, said crime would be a thing of the past in the state if government applies diverse strategies to create employment for the youths as that can reduce crime to the barest minimum.
