Onocha: University Management Must Play A Leading Role in Research

As Western Delta Holds 2-Day Research Summit

Renowned Research Professor, Charles Onocha, has insisted that the best way to write an award winning proposal is that the University management must play a leading role, insisting that the University must build a culture of research that provides a supportive climate for lecturers to operate.

“Every institution must develop a characteristics to facilitate research, which include recruitment and selection you must effectively develop to bring the best into the system,” adding that the best to three to three in masters should be brought in board to make them junior assistant research lecturers,

Onocha who was speaking as a guest speaker at the Western Delta University on Wednesday during the first day of a two day research summit, keynote lecture; writing award winning research proposals said also listed that catching them young and training them, emphasising that there must be clear coordinating goals,

“There must be coordination if you want to be productive research wise.

He then listed positive group climate, mentoring communication of professional networking outside, resources available, sufficient time to work in the system, opportunities available, governance structure in the university as some of the things, the university must undertake.

Speaking after the lecture, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mrs O. C Okobia said though the University was not there yet in terms of research, Professor Onocha was invited to lecture the academic staff, so as to encourage their atitude towards research, adding that it will enhance the performance of the academic staff.

Also speaking, Dr Bright Orhewere, acting Director, Directorate of Research in the institution said the lecture will certainly have a positive impact on the lecturers.

“We are challenged and motivated knowing that research is part of our call to duty.

“For you to write to attract a grant, you must know the purpose,” saying the summit has opened up areas they can improve upon.

Others who spoke on the essence of the lecture are Dr. Henry Oghoator, Dean, College of Social & Management Sciences, and Ambrose Chinenye Linda, a staff of the university who commended the Western Delta University Management board for organising the summit and encouraging research in their little way.

The research summit is expected to end on Thursday 20th of May, with some of the lecturers delivering lectures on keynotes in regard to impacting knowledge.
