Right Activist Charges Delta CP, State Police Command To Make Judicious Use Of Security Funds

A human rights activist and Vice Chairman of the state branch of Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsetomasan Agberen, has charged the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammed Ali, to make judicious use of funds allocated to Burutu Ovwian/Aladja Police Area Command Delta State by the government by providing among others, patrol vans to fight crimes in the area just as he urged the Delta State Government under the leadership of Sen.(Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Chief Hon Jite Brown, the . President General Forum of Udu communities and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to assist Ovwian/Aladja Police Division with patrol vans to enable the police combat crimes in the local government area as government cannot do it all.

Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsetomasan stated this over the weekend in a chat with newsmen in his office in Udu Road, Udu Local Government Area.

He said going by the meeting held on the 6th of February 2021, where the police boss was quoted to have said that he would provide Ovwian/Aladja division patol vehicles which of course was one of the reasons the meeting was held.

He added that the meeting was well attended by the likes of the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Chief Hon Jite Brown, President General Forum of Udu Communities, the General Civil Rights Groups where they all decried the poor and unfair treatment of Ovwian/Aladja Police Division.

They said the lack of vehicles in the division has made the rate of crimes to be on the increase as the police can hardly fight crimes in the area.

Comrade Derrick Agberen said the government allocates funds for security in the state, adding that it is good such money is used for the purpose it is meant by fighting crimes.

He said’: “No doubt, there is security funds and one wonders why there is high rate of crime in Udu Local Government Area If the budget is used to the fullest. It is good such money is used for what it is meant.”

Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsetomasan Agberen said it would not be out of place for the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command to make public, unless otherwise, the budget of Delta State Police Command as it concerns the protection of lives and property in the state.

While lamenting the poor state of police patol vans in the area which has led to inefficiency of police in fighting crimes, said, many of them can hardly respond to distress calls
from the members of the public.

He expressed disappointment over unfair treatment of the division in this regard, hence the local government has been under siege by cult groups, armed robbers and other criminal activities.

The Right Activist said’: “It is no doubt that today, due to lack of patrol vehicles in Ovwian/Aladja Division, have made the police to be ineffective in crimes control and that he entire local government is under siege.

Comrade Derrick Agberen said the provision of the patrol vans becomes necessary as the police allegedly rent vans for patrol, adding due to End SARS protest, drastic changes have taken place in Nigeria Police Force, saying this has made it difficult for them to sustain renting of vehicles and other sources of funding to boost security.

While thanking the police for fighting crimes despite the prevailng condition, he charged them to stop extoting money from motorists and tricyclists in checkpoints just as he said they should not be collecting money for bail as bail is free.
