E-Transmission Of Election Results: The Senate Has Done Well For Nigerians, Returned Power To The People- UPU

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has applauded the decision of the Senate to allow electronic transmission of election results, saying that the Red Chamber has dine well for Nigerians.

A statement signed by the President General, UPU, Worldwide, Chief Joe Omene, added that “this is one decision in which the Senate listened to the clamour of the people of this country.”

According to the statement, “this watershed approval of E-Transmission of election results” will “promote transparency and the integrity of elections in Nigeria.”

The UPU also commended all stakeholders across the country particularly the various socio-cultural groups, Civil Society Organizations, media “and indeed our own Vanguard Newspaper for being in the vanguard of this noble course as a platform for all to make their contributions during the debate on this matter.”

“By this decision on E-Transmission, as well as on the Direct Primary election process to allow members of political parties to choose popular and acceptable candidates for election directly, the Senate has by these acts promoted the return of power to the people to decide who should be candidates in elections,” UPU averred.

Adding: “If signed into law by the President, the members of the 9th Senate will have set an enviable record for themselves and will be remembered for putting the expressed interest of the Nation and its electoral development ahead of all other considerations.
In the annals of Electoral legislation, future generations will commend this decision as that turning point comparable with legislative changes in Europe that introduced the use of ballot papers to eliminate election manipulations through the influence of middlemen. The legislation passed by the Senate will provide new impetus and rekindle hope of voters to participate in the electoral process. The UPU therefore uses the renewed commitment of the Senate for the sanctity of the ballot to call on all Urhobos in the Central Senatorial District and the entire Delta who have not registered to come out in large numbers to participate actively in the on-going INEC registration, as well as Party members in coming party congresses and nominations, and also in the forthcoming 2023 general election as citizens,” the statement said.
