NAB Presents Educational Materials to Blind Students of Unity Schl. Agbarho

As part of activities  to compliment the efforts of the Federal and State governments in contributing to the growth and development of education in the country, a non-government organization known as the Nigerian Association of the Blind (NAB), has distributed Braille educational materials to blind students of Unity Model Secondary School, Agbaho in Ughelli North LGA, Delta State with a charge to make proper use of the materials.

Distributing the materials to the beneficiaries, by the South-South co-ordinator of the Association, Comrade Collins Akpanah said: “We are here today to give educational materials to the blind students of Unity Model Secondary School Agbarho; to help boost their learning so as to excel in their academic work, and we chose this school because this is the only secondary school in Delta State where we have blind students who are being trained for now. We are also doing this to encourage the students to be more focused in their academic work.”

The South South coordinator however, called on the students to make proper use  of the materials so as to justify the essence of  the gesture.

However, in a welcome address delivered by the Principal of the school, Mr. W.E Emore, he said that, “some years ago, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Asaba, under the leadership of Prof. Patrick Muoboghare established a special education unit (Blind), in the school and with this, Mrs. W.R Akpokiniovo, a special teacher was posted to the school for the training of  the special students and she has been assisted by others.”

Speaking further, Mr. Emore, also hinted that, “over the time, we have produced special students like Igbo Fejiro who studied Psychology at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, adding that Azubike Oba, Mariam Ojaye are currently in the University of Benin, Benin City, and also Joachim Djugolo and Innocent Obe who are also in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

He also said that Abel Edijana, one of the special students also wrote his Senior School Certificate  Examination conducted by both WAEC and NECO and he performed very well, adding that the presentation of the Braille textbooks to the school today is a welcome development which he said will afford the special students both in (SS 3), and (SS 2), the opportunity to read whatever they want to read, he principal stated.

Speaking to newsmen immediately after the presentation of the materials to the students, the Administrative Officer of the Association, Miss Oluwakemi Odusanya, the South South coordinator, Mr. Collins Akpanah and the chairman of the Association in Delta State chapter, Mr. Johnson Akpokiniovo said that the presentation of the materials will also go a long way to help the special students to excel in their academic activities. 

According to them, “the braille textbooks materials will as well develop their reading culture and make them to read fast.

On her part, the patron of the Association in Delta State Chapter, Dr. Mrs. Omo. Erabor, who also spoke during the presentation commended the efforts of the Association for deeming it fit to present these laudable materials for the special students.

She also used the medium to call on Delta State Government led by Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to as well contribute to the development of education of the special students.

However, the Chief Inspector of Education in Ughelli North LGA, Dr. John Ojogho (PhD), who was represented by Mr. John Omokiniovo also witnessed the presentation ceremony, calling on the special students to focus on their studies.

Speaking in the same vein, Mr Johnson Akpokiniovo also called on the apex body of the Urhobo Progress  Union  (UPU), to as well, support the initiative for the education of the blind student (special students), so as to excel in their academic activities.
