See The Four Largest Private Universities In Nigeria

There are currently ninety nine private universities approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The sizes of these ivory towers are usually defined in terms of their total enrollment.

According to the latest edition of National University System (NUS) Statistics Digest, there are only four universities that have undergraduate population above five thousand.

Let us take a cursory look at these four institutions.

The largest private university (by population) in Nigeria is Madonna University Nigeria (MUN). It is one of the three universities that were approved in 1999 and the first catholic university in Nigeria. MUN which has three campuses is having an undergraduate enrollment of nine thousand seven hundred and sixty three (9763) students with 4589 males and 5174 females.

The second largest university is Covenant University (CU). This school which received official approval in 2002 is currently the best private university in Nigeria. CU currently has 4395 male and 3159 female undergraduate students. This gives a gross undergraduate population of seven thousand five hundred and fifty four (7554) students.

Babcock University (BU) is the third largest private university in Nigeria. This institution began as Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA). It however received approval to operate as Babcock University in 1999 along with two other universities. This school currently has an undergraduate population of seven thousand five hundred and twenty three (7523). This population is made up of 3567 males and 3956 females.

Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) is the fifth largest private university in Nigeria. ABUAD was founded in 2009 an eminent lawyer who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). The school occupies a landmass of 130 hectares. Currently, the undergraduate population of the institution is five thousand nine hundred and seventy three (5973) out of which 2930 are males and 3043 are females.
