Delta Education Commissioner Urges Private School Owners To Brace Up To Operational Guidelines

Private school owners especially those running nursery and primary schools in Delta State have been advised to always ensure that they obtain licence from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and adhere to their operational guidelines.

The State Commissioner for Primary Education, Mr. Chika Ossai gave the advice in Asaba while fielding questions from newsmen on the rational behind the closure of two private schools in Asaba during the monitoring of resumption for the second term .

Ossai, who listed the affected schools to include Elisa and the Pleasant Field Schools, said that though the latter was operating under a beautiful environment, the school had no licence from government to operate.

The commissioner stated that the essence of the visits to schools was to ascertain the level of compliance with the resumption for the second term academic session.

He further disclosed that the former was operating in an unconducive environment that was not in conformity with the expectation of the ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, adding that the operators should look for a more conducive environment for effective teaching and learning to take place.

Ossai, who reiterated that Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration had done so much in the education system by prioritising the sector for the overall benefits of the children in the state, enjoined stakeholders in the sector to put in their best towards improving the system.

The Primary Education Commissioner reminded the operators of illegal schools, particularly those whose structure and facilities do not meet the expected requirements in the state that the state government would not hesitate to terminate their existence.

Ossai stated that the only challenge confronting public schools in the state was the issue of incessant destruction of school facilities, explaining that in most cases the vandals were from the communities where such schools existed.

He said that the Ministry would continue to carry advocacy in order to sensitise leaders and stakeholders in various communities on the importance of safeguarding government infrastructure in their domains.
