NUJ Delta Press Week: Medical Experts Lead Health Talk, Free Checkup, Sensitisation Walk In Asaba
By Joy Enamuotor-Simon
Activities for Day 3 of the NUJ Delta State Council, Press Week in Asaba took a highly impactful turn as health professionals from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) educated journalists on the growing dangers of hypertension and diabetes.
Speaking during the session, Dr. Ossai Chukwuma Anthony, Chairman of NMA Asaba Zone, and Dr. Adegbulu Daniel, the Zone’s Publicity Secretary, emphasized that hypertension, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even low blood pressure must never be taken lightly. They described them as silent yet deadly conditions that continue to affect many Nigerians, often without early symptoms.
The doctors highlighted the importance of lifestyle modification, including reduced salt intake, healthy eating habits, regular exercise, stress control, avoidance of excessive alcohol, and strict adherence to prescribed medications.
They stressed the need for proper diagnosis and consistent medical supervision.

Following the insightful pep talk, journalists participated in a free medical checkup, where blood pressure and blood sugar levels were tested to encourage early detection and preventive care.
The day’s activities concluded with a sensitisation walk from the NUJ Press Centre to the Secretariat and back—aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of regular health checks and healthy living.
The NUJ Press Week continues with more enlightening sessions and engagements in the days ahead.
