Governors, Traditional Rulers Can Do More In Securing Nigeria – Gambari

Chief of Staff to Nigeria’s President, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari CFR, has said that the issue of securing Nigeria must not be left in the hands of the Federal Government, saying that Governors and traditional rulers can do more in securing the country.

Gambari said this while delivering the 14th Convocation Lecture of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, on Wednesday.

Delivering the lecture, titled: ‘Education for Peace, Democracy and Development,’ Professor Gambari, said that though security is everyone’s business, it is important that the Federal Government leads from the front in securing the nation.

According to him, salvaging Nigeria is a collective responsibility, just as he opined that working for the stability of Nigeria will benefit the continent of Africa.

He called on Nigerians to be more involved in politics because politicking is far too important to be left in the hands of politicians, adding that if there must be peace, there must be inclusiveness.

Furthermore, he said that Africa does not only need strong institutions, but also needs strong men, while calling on Africans to start investing in Africa, stressing that foreigners will only invest in the continent when they see Africans doing so.

Meanwhile, he said quality education must be given to the youths in order to birth peace, democracy and development, noting that development, peace, respect for human rights, free and fair elections are attributes of any developing nation.

He added that “there can be no development without peace and there will no be durable development without sustainable peace.”

Prof. Gambari further stated that education for democracy and development are important tools needed for a developing country to become developed.

“Education itself is not a guarantee for success; therefore you need to embrace the mindset of continuous learning and reading,” he said.

In their separate remarks, Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, commended Prof. Gambari for honouring the invitation of the institution and doing justice to the topic.
