Gunmen Kill 3 Police Officers In Delta

Gunmen, in the early hours of Sunday, killed three policemen on patrol duty at Okpanam in Oshimili Local Government Area, Delta State.

The officers who were attacked near the divisional police headquarters at about 4.40 am were said to be responding to a distress call from a community leader.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, the patrol team had barely driven out of the station when the gunmen opened fire on them.

Identities of the deceased were given as ASP Eke Francis, Inspector Joshua Akengbo and Corporal Perekedo Unene.

The gunmen reportedly stole two AK47 rifle from the slain operatives.

The fourth policeman, Bassey Wisdom, who was injured, during the attack is said to be receiving treatment at the hospital.

Edafe also noted that one of the suspects has been arrested.

Meanwhile, the apex youth organization in their reaction, said that these heinous men struck last night to destabilize the relative peace enjoyed by the residents of the community.

The president of the apex youth association, Comrade Drsocial Lucky Okolo, in an exclusive interview, called for calm while charging every resident of the community to be security conscious and report any suspicious movement or persons to the nearest security outfit stationed in the community.

He also called on the various security apparatus and stakeholders in the state to remain resolute in ensuring the safety of residents within the state capital territory and the state at large.

The president described the three officers who lost their lives during the interface as fine officers and national heroes that deserve to be honoured.
