DELSU VC Bags ‘Progressive Leadership’ Award

Faculty of Agriculture, Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, has presented a ‘Progressive Leadership’ award to the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Andy Egwunyenga.

The presentation was done during the opening ceremony of the faculty’s 1st International Conference that kicked off on Tuesday.

Speaking during the presentation, Dean of the faculty, Professor Dicta Ogisi, said the VC is an answer to the prayers of the Faculty of Agriculture.

She recalled the beginning days of the faculty when eight of them were sent to Asaba to begin the faculty.

She disclosed how Professor Egwunyenga made noble inputs to the faculty many years ago, just as she said he greatly helped the faculty to relocate from Asaba to Abraka.

Professor Ogisi said that amongst the VC’s recent assistance to the faculty was the employment of 15 new staff and increasing the admission quota of the faculty, saying that before, they were mocked because they had more professors and associate professors than students.

She continued: “Today, the narrative has changed. I’m sure if he had his way he would’ve done more for us.”

Responding to the gesture, Egwunyenga thanked the faculty for honouring him with the award.

Stating that no nation can develop without agriculture, the VC said that the award will motivate him to do more in the area of agriculture, adding that as soon as he finishes his tenure, he will go into farming.

Meanwhile, former Executive Secretary of Tetfund and eminent Professor of Animal Science, Professor E S Bogoro was the Keynote Speaker, at the said conference.

His address emphasised the role of Research and Innovation in the development of Agriculture for Food Security in Nigeria.

The Theme of the Conference is Solving Food Insecurity in Fragile Economies.

While declaring the Conference open, the.VC urged participants from within and outside the country to rise up to the challenge of harnessing the huge potentials of Agriculture in developing countries.

The opening ceremony also featured exhibition of innovations in Agriculture and Food Processing.

The conference will end on Thursday.
