Benedict Akwuegbu Tops List For Sports Minister Position

Former Super Eagles forward, Ben Akwuegbu has emerged as top contender in a long list of eight (8) eminent Nigerians as possible replacement for Youth and Sports Development Minister, Sunday Dare.

Akwuegbu, during his illustrious career, played for the Nigeria U17s, U20s, U23s and senior national team, Super Eagles.

The man called Austria Bomber went on to enjoy a glorious career in Europe, including spells at Sturm Gratz of Austria, amongst other European countries.

At the moment, the former founder of Mbaise Lions FC and now Ben Akwuegbu FC, Jos, is pursuing Mental Nurse program program at Angelia Ruskin University, ARU, England.

Checks reveal that Akwuegbu is seen as fit enough to occupy the Youth and Sports Development position to consolidate on Sunday Dare’s legacy.

The likes of Chief Segun Odegbami, a former Super Eagles captain nicknamed ‘Mathematical’, Alhaji Gara Gombe, Kunle Soname who owns Remo Stars FC, Victor Ikpeba, former Super Eagles and Africa Footballer of the Years and Honour Sirawo incumbent President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, are also on the Sports ministerial wish list.

Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, Victor Ikpeba, a former Super Eagles striker and Daniel Amokach also made the eight-man list.

“Without sentiment, I feel Akwuegbu will be a better option for President Bola Tinubu for the position of Sports Minister.

“He’s floated football teams, known how it feels to run organised sports and even contested for NFF position.

“If he’s eventually picked, I think he will make a good choice”, Chikezie Irem said this Wednesday afternoon.
