Postgraduate School, Strength Of Any University –DELSU VC

The Postgraduate School of any University is an index of the strength of the institution.

Professor Andy Egwunyenga, the Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), said this on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, while declaring open a one-day Interactive Session for staff of the Postgraduate School with the objective of making them more knowledgeable about current trends in University Administration to improve their productivity and enhance service delivery.

The top University Administrator noted that DELSU Postgraduate School “is well established and has proved to be one of the strongest Units of the University.”

The Professor of Pathology and Entomology, expressed confidence in the ability of the Postgraduate School to continue to set the tune of how the University should be moved forward. He praised the Postgraduate School for coming up with certain criteria which enabled candidates to start publishing before obtaining their Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. In his words, “It means that they learn the culture of publishing while in school, thus embracing the time tested maxim in the academia which says ‘publish or perish!”

Professor Egwunyenga, a former Rector of the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku, expressed satisfaction with the Training which would improve capacity building. While congratulating the Postgraduate School for being the first to comply with the Senate directive that all Faculties should organize In-house Trainings for their staff, in line with an earlier one organized by the Management of the University for senior office holders, the University’s helmsman stressed that “we can address emerging challenges if we make our staff more competitive.”

Welcoming the Vice-Chancellor and his Management Team, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Temi Akporhonor stated that the In-house Interactive Session was in compliance with Senate directive that the ideas of the Time Management Workshop earlier organized by Management should percolate down the line. He explained that the Postgraduate School decided to use its own staff because “we have some competent hands here,” adding that the ”Postgraduate School is like a mini University with full complement of staff where the Dean is like the Vice-Chancellor.”

In order to make the In-house Training worthwhile, the Postgraduate School lined up four senior staff. The first lecture by Mr. Muobo Denedo, Principal Assistant Registrar ( Establishments), dwelt on *Time Management and Effective Record Keeping* . The second lecture which addressed *The Role of Discipline in Achieving Set Goals* was presented by Mr. E. O. Egheneji, Senior Deputy Registrar and Secretary to the Postgraduate School. The third lecture which focused on *Reports and Minutes Writing* was presented by Mr. Clement Eyankwaire, Deputy Registrar (CHS), while the fourth one on *Effective Filing System* was presented by the Principal Personal Secretary to the Dean of the Post Graduate School, Mr. Goddey Onotu. The Dean of the Post Graduate School, Professor Temi Akporhonor moderated the question and answer session.
