UPDATED: Delta NUJ Elects Churchill Oyowe As Chairman, 4 Others

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council, has elected Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Deputy Director, Ministry of Information as the new Chairman to take over Comrade Mike Ikeogwu.

Oyowe emerged Chairman after he polled a total of 234 votes, defeating Comrade Salvation Ogono,Deputy Director of the Ministry of Information, who ganered 185 votes during the polls that held at the State NUJ Secretariat in Asaba.

Also elected were Comrade Felix Eku, of DBS Warri chapel, Vice Chairman; Comrade Victor Sorokwu, of Asaba Correspondents’ chapel, Secretary; Comrade Josephine Omodion, of Indigenous Correspondents’ chapel, Assistant Secretary; and Comrade Celestine Akpokoba, of Federal Information chapel, Auditor.

Caroline Ubini, of DBS Asaba chapel, was returned unopposed as State Treasurer of the union, and Comrade Polycarp, of Ughelli Correspondents’ chapel, as Financial Secretary.

The Vice President, Zone F of NUJ, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, who supervised the election with the Zonal Secretary, Comrade John Angese; said a total of 534 delegates registered to vote, but 424 actually voted.

Comrade Dokubo expressed delight that the election was generally peaceful and congratulated the new executive members on their victory, urging them to work as a team and extend hands of fellowship to their rivals to take the union to greater heights.

He paid tributes to his predecessor, Comrade Edward Akpati Ogwude; past Chairman of the State Council, including Comrades Norbert Chiazor, Osita Boise and the immediate past Chairman, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu; for their contributions to the growth of NUJ in Delta, saying that they should support the new Exco with wise counsel to enable it succeed.

In his acceptance speech after subscribing to the relevant oaths, Comrade Oyowe thanked Journalists in the state for their peaceful conduct all through the electoral process and for the opportunity given to him and members of his team to serve the union.

The new Chairman said their victory was for all members of the union, including those who lost the election, and promised to waken the once vibrant State Council from its current slumber so that members could reasonably feel the impact of the union.
