Bill Seeking To Decriminalize Attempted Suicide Passes Second Reading

The Bill seeking to decriminalize attempted suicide, on Tuesday, passed second reading at the House of Representaives.
Sponsor of the Bill, Rev. Francis Ejiroghene Waive, member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency, disclosed this.
Posting on X, Wednesday morning, he wrote: “At plenary yesterday
Tuesday 12th March 2024, my Bill seeking to decriminalize attempted suicide by amending Section 327 of the Criminal Code which imposes a one year jail term passed 2nd reading.”

He continued: “I had sponsored this Bill in the 9th Assembly but didn’t make substantial progress.”
According to him, “with the signing of the Mental Health Act which prescribes psycho-social counseling, bringing the Criminal Code in tandem with it’s provisions is the way to go.”
