DTHA Amends Administration Of Criminal Justice, Civil Justice Bills

The Delta State House of Assembly has passed two Bills – The Delta State Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill 2024 and The Delta State Administration of Civil Justice (Amendment) Bill 2024 into Law.

The Bills were passed at the Tuesday, 14th May, 2024 plenary, following motions that were moved by Hon. Engr. Emeka Nwaobi, Majority Leader, for it’s second and third readings/passage.

Disclosing the development, Nwaobi in a statement, added: “During the debate for second reading which I opened, I told my colleagues that the Executive Bills sought to do just one simple thing – expunge the sections that talked about the timing for the pilot test of the implementation of the law, which is 12 months, and insert the clause for the period of test running the law to be 24 months.

“From the argument I canvassed based on the realities on ground, it was expedient to increase the number of months to test run the law from 12 months to 24 months to enable the handlers of the law adequate time to grapple with the understanding of the nitigrities of the law for effective implementation.

“I specifically commended the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori for his meticulous spotting of the defect in the law and promptly reaching out to the Legislature to effect the Amendment in order to give speed to the administration of the criminal justice system and of course, the administration of the civil justice system.”

Furthermore, he appreciated his colleagues for their understanding to the effect that a well thought out administration of criminal justice system and administration of civil justice system would enhance the advancement of the society with regards to a rule of law that is seamless, unambiguous, procedural and effective in justice.
