Sunshine Stars Appoint Former Captain Abe Sunday As Match Reader

Sunshine Stars Football Club of Ondo has appointed its retired captain, Abe Sunday, as one of its match readers, alongside ex-international player Kayode Idowu. The club’s Media Officer, Femi Atolagbe, announced the appointments in a statement on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the Board, Bamidele Ologunloluwa, was quoted as directing that the club retire the iconic number 10 jersey for the current season, honoring Sunday’s contribution to the team. Ologunloluwa highlighted the significance of Sunday’s experience in helping the club progress, despite his retirement from active play.

“Abe Sunday is not only a pride to Ondo State but to Nigeria as a whole. His expertise is vital to the team’s growth, which is why we have appointed him and Kayode Idowu as match readers,” Ologunloluwa said.

Abe Sunday, who captained Sunshine Stars up until the 2023/2024 season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), officially announced his retirement on Wednesday. He had a distinguished career representing Nigeria at various levels, including the U-17 AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, and the national U-23 team. In 2010, Sunday also played for the home-based Super Eagles.

Kayode Idowu, the second appointee, is a former Super Eagles player who made his international debut against Madagascar in 2001.

The Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) congratulated Sunday on his retirement, praising his dedication and long service as the club’s captain. Sunday’s career also included a loan spell at Teuta Durres FC in Albania during the 2017/2018 season.
