Wadocity Residents Decry Poor Road Conditions Amid Julius Berger’s Bridge Construction

By Otiti

Residents of Wadocity in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed deep frustration over the poor state of major roads in the area, following ongoing construction activities by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

The construction firm is currently working on three bridges in Effurun, causing significant hardship for commuters and road users.

According to concerned residents, critical roads such as the Effurun Roundabout, Ebrumede, and Enerhen roads have deteriorated rapidly since the commencement of the bridge projects. These roads are now riddled with gallops and potholes, making them nearly impassable for both private and commercial vehicles. Motorists lamented over the daily damage to their vehicles as they struggle through the poorly maintained roads.

The residents condemned Julius Berger for failing to provide temporary motorable routes before embarking on such a massive construction exercise. They insisted that it is the responsibility of the construction company to ensure that alternative routes are created for the smooth movement of traffic while projects of this magnitude are underway.

Many fingers are also pointing at the Delta State Government and the Commissioner for Works for neglecting their duties in overseeing the welfare of residents. Road users argue that state authorities should have ensured that proper traffic diversion and road maintenance measures were put in place before approving the commencement of these projects.

“We cannot continue like this. Our vehicles are being destroyed daily, businesses are suffering, and people are facing untold hardship just trying to go about their normal activities,” lamented a frustrated commercial driver in the area. Several other commuters shared similar sentiments, calling for immediate intervention from the government.

The residents stressed that while the construction of bridges is a welcome development, it must not come at the expense of the people’s safety and convenience. They urged Julius Berger to expedite the process of creating functional bypasses and alternative routes to ease the traffic gridlock and reduce the wear and tear on vehicles.

Wadocity residents appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Commissioner for Works to urgently address the situation by compelling the contractor to take necessary measures. They emphasized the need for government officials to show genuine concern for the plight of the people and ensure that ongoing infrastructural projects do not worsen the living conditions of citizens.
