Edo State Govt Mourns Young Flood Victim, Urges Flood Safety, Vigilance

The Edo State Government has paid a condolence visit to the family of Master Nathan Spencer, a schoolboy who lost his life in a recent flood incident in the Uselu area of Egor Local Government.

Representing the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, with the Principal of Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) and the Executives of Egor Local Government Council, described the loss as painful, noting that Nathan was a child with potentials. He said the tragedy affected not just the family but the entire State.

It was reported that the child was taken to a private school outside his area to sit for an examination, where he was exposed to the danger of flood. The Governor admonishing parents on their decisions, called for care and urged them to make decisions that prioritize safety, assuring that his Government will continue to improve on its responses.

The Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, stressed the need for awareness and patience during rainfall. He pointed out that most floods in areas like Uselu are short-lived and little delays could equate maximum safety. He cautioned that poor waste disposal continues to block drainage systems and worsen flooding. He said EdoSEMA is working with the Ministry of Environment and the Waste Management Board to educate the public on proper practices.

Hon. Idahosa said his presence at the visit was part of the Agency’s response to emergencies and to support the bereaved family. He assured residents in the State of continued engagement to prevent future loss of life.

The Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Ighodalo Kelvin Eguakun, urged residents to avoid moving through flooded areas during the rainy season. He said the Council was clearing drains and maintaining infrastructure but needed the understanding and support of residents. He advised parents and pupils to be cautious and to wait for floodwaters to subside before leaving home, especially during early morning hours.

Nathan’s father, Mr. Paul Spencer, appreciated the Government for its support. He said the family was devastated by the loss but acknowledged the officials’ presence and concern. The visit ended with prayers for the family. The State and Local governments pledged to stand by the family and to continue efforts to improve safety across the State.
