Edo State Govt Shuts Down Orphanage Over Poor Environmental Conditions

Towards protecting the welfare of vulnerable children, the Edo State Government through its Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has temporarily closed down the Tender Heart Orphanage, located at Murtala Muhammed Way in Benin City.
According to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Chief Bisi Idaomi, the closure with effect from 22nd April, 2025, was consequent upon an on-the-spot audit conducted by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien with the staff of the Department of Child Development on 16th April, 2025.
She stated that the audit revealed severe issues of overcrowding and poor hygiene, which pose significant health risks to the children residing there.
Hon. Idaomi emphasized the utmost importance of the children’s health, safety, and overall welfare. She urged the Orphanage’s Management to cooperate fully with officers of the Ministry during the transition and relocation process, as she directed the relocation of the 22 children to God’s Own Orphanage in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State.

The Commissioner revealed that the Tender Heart Orphanage was given a 30-day period, with an additional 30-day grace period, to address the identified issues, and that failure to comply with the directives within the timeframe, will result in permanent closure of the Home.
The Ministry’s decision to temporarily close the Orphanage underscores its commitment to ensuring that vulnerable children in care are provided with safe, inspiring and nurturing environment.
