Ghost Workers: FG Initiates Audit For Civil Servants
The Nigerian government has initiated a personnel audit for civil servants, aiming to capture each employee’s Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identification Number (NIN). This database is expected to help eliminate ghost workers.
Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), revealed this through a statement released by Mrs. Eno Olotu, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the HCSF office in Abuja, on Wednesday.
Walson-Jack mentioned that this initiative, endorsed as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is intended to develop a contemporary and effective civil service.

She explained that the audit would assess the size, organization, and skill set of the workforce, while also pinpointing the skills needed to meet future service demands.
She stated that the initiative will create a verified digital database for personnel, which will be connected to National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).
She clarified that the database is intended to remove ghost workers, resolve discrepancies in employee records, and offer a precise overview of the workforce.
“The initiative will also identify skills gaps in critical areas such as ICT, project management, public finance and data analysis,” the statement added.
Walson-Jack announced that she would be leading the steering committee. The committee will include key permanent secretaries, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office, representatives from the Presidency, and relevant consultants.
