Delta Police Debunk Claims From Greg Okwumbu, Confirm He Is Facing Fraud, Forgery Charges

The Delta State Police Command has dismissed claims by Mr. Greg Okwumbu that his arrest was linked to his social media activities, insisting instead that he is currently standing trial on multiple counts of fraud and forgery.

According to reliable police sources within the command headquarters in Asaba, Mr. Okwumbu was arrested after he allegedly forged the official letterhead of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and the signature of Barrister Tobechukwu to mislead a real estate developer. The forged document falsely claimed that the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku had consented to land sales in favour of Ifejiaka Haruna Estate Asaba and allocated land in Ogbe Ani village to the same Ifejiaka Haruna Estate.

Investigations revealed that the matter had earlier been discussed at the Palace of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku with the relevant parties, including the Ogbe Ani chief and the developer. Mr. Okwumbu, who was present at the Palace on an unrelated matter during those discussions, allegedly used the opportunity to obtain sensitive information. He later approached both the developer and the Ogbe Ani chief, promising to secure the consent of the traditional ruler. To back up this claim, he allegedly produced forged documents, including the falsified signature of Barrister Ogidi, and used them to defraud the developer of ₦15 million.

Police sources confirmed that despite being invited for questioning, Mr. Okwumbu evaded arrest for months and refused to honour police summons. He was eventually apprehended in Lagos at a bank. Since his arraignment at the Ogwashi-Uku Magistrate Court, several additional individuals have come forward with fresh petitions alleging similar fraudulent schemes. At least three of these petitions are presently under investigation.

“This has nothing to do with his social media videos,” one police officer, who asked not to be named, explained. “The charges are based on serious allegations of fraud and forgery backed by evidence and multiple petitions.” He has been charged in Charge No M/23c/2025 at the Magistrate Court in Ogwashi-Uku.

Confirming the allegations, Mr. Ebube, an elder from Ogbe Ani village, said the trial was ongoing and several witnesses had already testified. He urged members of the public to disregard what he described as “self-serving videos” released by Mr. Okwumbu.

“No one is arrested or charged in Ogwashi-Uku without credible allegations. Greg has a long history of fraudulent activities against community members,” Mr. Ebube said. “We all know him. We know his modus operandi and his antecedents. Whenever he speaks, it is either to beg for money or to set up his next fraudulent scheme. Luckily, the entire community is aware of his antics.”

The police have reiterated that Mr. Okwumbu’s prosecution is strictly a result of his alleged criminal conduct and not connected to his attempts to portray himself as a victim through online videos.
