Cameroon Authorizes Eight New Churches, Including Two Nigerian Mega-Churches

Eight Churches, including Winner’s Chapel and Redeemed Christian Church of God, have received official authorization to operate in Cameroon in a series of presidential decrees signed by President Paul Biya this Friday.

The approvals follow warnings last year from the Minister of Territorial Administration, who threatened to shut down all unregistered churches in the country—a move that could affect thousands of evangelical movements.

Before this latest authorization, only 47 churches in Cameroon had been legally approved to operate, according to MINAT.

Among the newly authorized churches is Winner’s Chapel International, an evangelical charismatic denomination founded by Nigerian Bishop, David Oyedepo.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God, founded by Pastor E.A. Adeboye in Lagos, Nigeria, also received presidential approval to operate in Cameroon.

Other newly authorized denominations include The Russian Orthodox Church of Cameroon, Reformed Overcomers Chapel, Église Évangélique Libre du Cameroun, Mission Chrétienne de l’Espérance – Maison de Prière, Chapelle de la Gloire du Christ and Communauté Missionnaire Chrétienne Internationale.
