DELSU PGSAN: Caleb Godwin-Ivworin-Led Executive Sworn In

The newly elected Caleb Godwin-Ivworin-led executive of the Postgraduate Students’ Association of Nigeria (PGSAN), Delta State University chapter, has been sworn in.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Postgraduate Board Room, Campus 3, DELSU, Abraka.

Present at the brief ceremony were the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Samuel Asagba represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Edmund Atakpo and the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada.

Speaking during the occasion, Prof. Asagba assured the executive that his administration is available to give the necessary support, just as he emphasized the significance of teamwork, mutual listening, and open interaction among the leaders of the Association for collective success.

He noted that working together effectively leads to positive outcomes.

Furthermore, he emphasized the need for an ideal friendly and supportive relationship between postgraduate students and their supervisors, drawing from his own positive experience.

He also frowned at some students who pursue postgraduate studies without genuine effort in research, seeking shortcuts, and failing to engage with available workshops on research skills.

Continuing, the VC urged the new leadership to create a robust communication platform for students, moving beyond casual channels like WhatsApp.

He reiterated the critical nature of financial challenges and called upon the association to develop a clear vision, make tangible impact, and advance the postgraduate school, with research being a fundamental aspect.

DELSU VC advised the executive to be innovative and make a difference in the history of the postgraduate association.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof. Awhefeada admonished the new executive to maintain the standard of the university and the postgraduate school with high esteem.

On the election, he said it was credible, free and fair.

The Dean urges the leaders to always remember that their new office demands personal service, adding that they must put the student first and also carry the management along in their activities.

He also advised that matters which the exco could not handle should be brought to the management of the postgraduate school through the office of the Associate Dean, stating that proper investigation and action will be taken with immediate effect.

On his part, Pastor Caleb Godwin-Ivworin, said his administration intends to do a lot of things, stating that one of his visions is to protect and advocate for the interests of PG students across all faculties.

He added: “We will promote academic excellence through research support seminars and mentorship, while strengthening student welfare and well-being through improved access to facilities and emergency support.

“Then we have fostering unity and collaboration among all postgraduate students.

“And lastly, we are here to uphold a transparent, accountable and inclusive leadership for all.”

According to him, a help desk will be set-up immediately to help students who have academic and financial issues.

Ivworin said they have put measures in place, saying that apart from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), they will sort for funds outside.

In his words, “there are great men who have passed through the institution and they are ready to assist.”

“So we are having a welfare purse which will open for voluntary donations where people can donate and support such people. With the help desk and which we have set up, students who have such issues will communicate with us.”

He also expressed appreciation to students for their participation in the peaceful and fair election, despite the ASUU strike, while promising not to let them down.

Regarding the issue of extortion of PG students raised by the Vice Chancellor, he disclosed that the new executive plans to use the newly established help desk as a channel for students to report such issues.

Speaking further, he noted that the Dean of the Postgraduate School is strictly against such practices.

Highlight of the programme was the taking of oaths by the exco administered by the Secretary, PG School and Chairman of the Electoral Committee that brought in the new leaders, Mr. Samuel Eghenedi.

In his vote of thanks, the PGSAN Public Relations Officer, Comr. Prince Godstime Ukuanovwe (PUGO), thanked all that made the swearing-in ceremony a success.

He also appreciated God and the management for the smooth transition.
